Positano is built down a cliff. There is effectively one road in, part of the SS163, and the town below it is stairs — several hundred between the upper road and the beach, with no alternative for most of the descent. Everything, including luggage, comes down them.
In summer the road is also rationed. The province runs an alternating number-plate scheme across the coast from roughly 10:00 to 18:00 — even plates barred on even dates, odd on odd — beginning in Easter week and running through summer weekends and holidays. Motorcycles are exempt; hotel guests only for arrival and departure. Fines start around €87.
