An orange alert closes Vesuvius automatically, all day
Whether you get up Vesuvius is not a ranger's judgement on the morning. Article 1 of the park's access protocol — the Protocollo per la fruizione turistica ecosostenibile del Sentiero n. 5 “Il Gran Cono”, annexed to Presidential Resolution 28 of 25 June 2024 — closes the ticket office and the path automatically on any day the Campania regional civil protection authority issues an allerta meteo at orange level or above. The trigger is a published regional bulletin, not the weather at the crater.
The same protocol governs the rest of the visit, and it is stricter than most accounts suggest. Tickets are sold online only, timed to a ten-minute slot, and the crater is not a free hike: above 1,000 metres every group is escorted by a Presidio Permanente Vulcano Vesuvio guide, sixty people enter every ten minutes, and the daily cap moves with the season — 3,240 in July and August when the path runs 9:00 to 18:00, down to 2,160 from November to February when it closes at 15:00.
Weather is not the only thing that shuts it, and recently not the main one. A fire on 8 August 2025 suspended ticketing, the Gran Cono and every guided walk on the park's trails. Snow and ice close the access road by ordinance of the Comune di Ercolano, which is what reopenings on 11 January and 1 April 2026 followed, and storms on 23 June 2026 caused landslides that shut the Rifugio Imbò stretch until 10 July.

When is the best time to visit Naples?
April to mid-June, and late September into October. Both give warmth without the July-August peak near 30C, and both sit outside the wet months that most often trigger the orange weather alerts which close Vesuvius. November is the wettest month at around 174 mm, so late autumn risks losing the volcano and the coastal excursions together.
Can you always climb Vesuvius?
