The road is rationed by number plate in summer
The SS163 between Positano and Vietri sul Mare is one road, cut into a cliff, carrying every car, coach and delivery van on the coast. To keep it moving, the province runs an alternating number-plate scheme: on even-numbered dates, vehicles whose plate ends in an even digit are barred; on odd dates, odd plates. It applies roughly 10:00 to 18:00, from Easter week and then across summer weekends and holidays into September.
Motorcycles and scooters are exempt. Hotel guests are exempt only for arrival and departure, not for driving around during the day. Fines run from about €87 to €344 and are sent to the registered keeper, which for a hire car means the rental company forwards it to you.
Precise dates shift year to year, so the scheme is worth checking against the current provincial notice rather than assumed from a previous season.
