Rebuilding after Helene, and open for visitors
Hurricane Helene struck western North Carolina in September 2024 and did severe damage to Asheville and the surrounding mountains — flooding the River Arts District, cutting water supply for weeks and triggering landslides across the Blue Ridge Parkway.
As of 2026 the city is open and actively courting visitors, but the recovery is not finished. Hotel demand was still running roughly 20% below pre-Helene levels in January 2026, Parkway repairs continue across some 45 active recovery sites, and the full road programme is projected to complete by the end of 2026.
The practical upshot for a traveller is that Asheville itself is functioning normally while specific mountain roads and trails may not be. Tourism is also a large part of how the region recovers, which is unusual in making the visit itself useful.
