The gateway to America's busiest national park — which charges nothing to enter
Gatlinburg sits at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the United States by a wide margin. The reason is partly geography — it lies within a day's drive of a large share of the American population — and partly that the park has never charged an entrance fee, a condition of the land transfer that created it.
That free access is why visitor numbers dwarf parks with far more famous scenery, and why the roads through Gatlinburg carry the load. October weekends, when autumn colour peaks, can bring the corridor close to gridlock.
Parking inside the park does now require a paid tag, so "free" applies to entry rather than to stopping. It remains an unusually cheap national park to visit.
