An earthquake in 1925 is why the whole city looks the same
Santa Barbara's uniform white-walled, red-tiled appearance is not organic. A major earthquake in 1925 destroyed much of the downtown, and in rebuilding, the city adopted architectural controls requiring a Spanish Colonial Revival style — an unusually early and unusually sustained example of a whole American downtown being held to one aesthetic.
A century on, that decision is the reason the city reads as a single composition rather than a collection of eras, and why it trades on the name American Riviera.
The climate underneath it is mild rather than hot — August peaks around 23C — with a marine layer that can hold cloud over the coast through the mornings of early summer, the local phenomenon known as June Gloom.

September and October. The June Gloom marine layer has cleared, the ocean is at its warmest after summer heating, and the crowds have thinned. July is our measured crowd peak. Spring is green and pleasant but the mornings are often overcast on the coast. Rainfall is effectively nil from June to September, so the only real weather variable in summer is morning cloud.
