Moraine Lake Road is closed to private cars year-round
Parks Canada's own wording is blunter than the version that circulates on travel sites: "Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round." It is not a seasonal gate and not a peak-hours restriction. Driving the road is permitted only for Parks Canada shuttles, licensed commercial operators holding a Moraine Lake Road Licence of Occupation, and registered guests of Moraine Lake Lodge. Cycling and walking are allowed, though Parks Canada treats the lake as a backcountry destination with no cell service, water or lighting, and advises against the 28 km round-trip hike.
What is seasonal is the bus, not the ban. In 2026 the Moraine Lake shuttle runs 1 June to 12 October, weather permitting; the Lake Louise Lakeshore shuttle runs from 15 May. Reservations opened on 15 April 2026, but only 40 percent of seats were released then — the remaining 60 percent go on sale at 8 am MDT two days before departure, and sell out quickly. An adult seat is $12.75, plus a $3.50 online reservation fee and a separate park entry fee.
Lake Louise runs under a different regime and is routinely confused with it. The lakeshore is open to cars year-round, but parking is $42 a day through the shuttle season and the lot fills before sunrise. In winter Moraine Lake Road is track-set for skiing, while the lake itself is closed off by avalanche hazard.
