Nidaros Cathedral closes at 1pm on Saturdays, July included
Nidaros Cathedral publishes its hours for every day of the year, and they are not the hours most visitors assume. From 1 June to 31 August it admits visitors 09:00 to 18:00 on weekdays. For the other nine months that weekday window is 09:00 to 14:00. Saturday, though, is 09:00 to 13:00 in all twelve months, August included, and Sunday visiting does not begin until 13:00, because the mornings belong to services.
The rest of the precinct switches on the same two dates. The Archbishop's Palace and the Crown Regalia run 10:00 to 17:00 from 1 June to 31 August and 11:00 to 14:00 for the rest of the year, a three-hour window. Take a real date: on Saturday 22 August 2026 the cathedral shuts at 13:00 while the palace across the courtyard stays open until 15:00.
The pilgrim reception keeps a similar clock and a stricter calendar. It sits at Kjopmannsgata 1 behind the cathedral, opens 13:00 to 17:45 daily, and stops for the year on 15 September. It is the only place the Olav Letter is issued, and the thresholds are exact: the last 100 kilometres on foot, the last 200 by bicycle, or six of the 26 key sites on the coastal route, all stamped in a pilgrim passport that costs 50 NOK and has to be presented in person.

What is the best time to visit Trondheim?
June to August. It is the only stretch when Nidaros Cathedral opens 09:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and the Archbishop's Palace runs 10:00 to 17:00 rather than 11:00 to 14:00. July is the warmest month at around 14.8C mean, and Olavsfest fills the cathedral precinct from 28 July to 3 August every year.

How long does it take to walk the St Olav Way to Trondheim?
Gudbrandsdalsleden, the most walked of the nine routes, is 643 km from Oslo and is planned as about 32 days at roughly 20 km a day. The recommended window is 1 June to 1 September, and the route's managers advise against crossing Dovrefjell before 10 June, both for snow and meltwater and to leave calving reindeer undisturbed.
Is the Trampe bicycle lift still running?
No. Trondheim municipality's own page states that in 2026 the lift is closed until further notice and that it is unclear when it will reopen. Tourist pages still list it as running 07:00 to 21:00 every day, which is its normal schedule when in service. It opened on Brubakken in August 1993 as the first machine of its kind.
When is Olsok and the St Olav Festival?
Olsok, St Olav's Day, falls on 29 July, the day the church marks the death of King Olav Haraldsson at Stiklestad in 1030. Olavsfest is built around it and runs 28 July to 3 August every year, in and around Nidaros Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace and the city centre, with a large free family programme. The pilgrim reception keeps special hours across those days.
How long are the days in Trondheim?

Thirty minutes and 172 steps up narrow, dark passages to the central tower, for a view over the whole city. It costs NOK 70 on top of the entrance ticket, tickets are sold at the visitor centre on the day, and departures run on the hour and half hour during opening hours. Minimum age is 8, and under-12s must be with an adult.
