Lofoten

Lofoten is the Norwegian archipelago strung 200 km out into the Norwegian Sea above the Arctic Circle, famous for its serrated granite peaks rising sheer from the water and its red-and-white wooden fishing villages. The Lofotveggen ("Lofoten Wall") — the silhouette of jagged peaks visible from the mainland — is one of Europe's iconic landscapes. Climate is moderated by the Gulf Stream so winters stay surprisingly mild for the latitude (mean January temp ~-1°C), but the seasonal extremes are dramatic: midnight sun from late May to mid-July, polar night from early December to early January. Summer hiking (Reinebringen, Hermannsdalstinden) and autumn northern lights are the two main visitor windows. The road infrastructure (E10) makes the whole archipelago drivable in a day, but most travelers base in Svolvær (transport hub + nightlife) or Reine (the iconic photo village).

Common questions

When is midnight sun visible in Lofoten?
From May 26 to July 17 the sun does not set north of the Arctic Circle, which includes all of Lofoten. The brightest "deep night" effect runs mid-June to early July. Twilight rather than true darkness extends roughly April through August.
When are northern lights best in Lofoten?
Late September through early April, with peak activity around the equinoxes (late September, late March). You need clear sky + dark sky — Lofoten's coastal weather is notoriously variable, so plan 4-5 nights to maximize your chances.
Should I base in Svolvær or Reine?
Svolvær is the transport hub (airport at Leknes, fast ferry from Bodø, more accommodation + restaurants) and works as a one-base trip. Reine is the iconic photo spot (Reinebringen hike, picture-postcard rorbu cabins on stilts over the water) but 2.5 hours' drive south of Svolvær and has fewer services. Many travelers do both: Svolvær first, then Reine for 2-3 nights.
How long do I need in Lofoten?
Minimum 3 nights to see the highlights (Svolvær base + day trip to Reine + one hike). 5-7 nights to also include Henningsvær and slow-travel the E10.
