Lake Tahoe is one of the most closely monitored lakes on earth. Since 1968, UC Davis has lowered a ten-inch white Secchi disk into the water and recorded the depth at which it disappears — an unbroken annual clarity record now approaching sixty years.
The 2025 average was 69.2 feet, about seven feet clearer than 2024's 62.3 feet, though researchers note that is not statistically different from recent years, and summer clarity in particular has stayed relatively low. The seasonal split matters to visitors: the water is typically at its clearest outside the warm months, when fine particles and algae are least active.
So the lake you photograph in August is measurably not the lake in the postcard. That has nothing to do with temperature, which is the only thing a climate score can tell you.

What is the best month to go to Lake Tahoe?
July and August for swimming, hiking and full access to the lake, which is also when it is busiest. September is the better balance — warm days, thinner crowds and the water still holding summer heat. For skiing, January through March. June can still hold snow on the higher trails around the rim.
What is the cheapest time to go to Lake Tahoe?
Late April to early June, and again October into November. Both sit between the ski and summer seasons, so lodging drops sharply on both the Nevada and California shores. The trade-off is that lifts have closed, some higher trails are still snowbound, and lake water is too cold for most people.
