Re-score for me — drag the dial — every chart recolours live for your heat & sea limits 27°C · sea 29°C
Default 27 °C is the upper edge of the Holiday Climate Index "ideal comfort" band (Scott, Rutty, Amelung & Tang, 2016). Above this, most warm-tourism travellers report measurable discomfort.
Default 29 °C is the Beach Climate Index "bathtub" line (Morgan et al.) — where the sea stops being refreshing and starts feeling like a warm bath.

The Racic mausoleum is shut every Sunday, and all winter
Ivan Mestrovic's Racic mausoleum, the white stone rotunda in the cemetery above Cavtat harbour, is the one work here that turns up in art histories. Its keeper, the Museums and Galleries of Konavle, publishes a single season for it: 1 May to 31 October, Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 16:00, closed on Sundays and public holidays, EUR 4 for an adult. Its three sister institutions each carry a second, winter row for 1 November to 30 April. The mausoleum has no such row.
House Bukovac, the painter's birthplace a few minutes down the hill, is the opposite: open all year, EUR 7, and the only one of the four that admits visitors on a Sunday, 10:00 to 14:00 in season. The Konavle County Museum at Gruda also opens on Sunday mornings from May to October. A Sunday in Cavtat is not an empty day; it simply cannot include the mausoleum.
The boat runs to a season as well. The regular line from Cavtat through Plat, Mlini and Srebreno to Dubrovnik's Old Town port operates 1 April to 1 November, six departures each way, the last one leaving Dubrovnik at 17:30. Libertas bus 10 covers the same 18 km every day of the year, from 05:00 until a final departure from Dubrovnik at 01:30. Anything you want to do in Dubrovnik after dinner is a bus plan, not a boat plan.

What is the best time to visit Cavtat?
Late May to June, or September. The boat to Dubrovnik runs 1 April to 1 November and the Racic mausoleum only 1 May to 31 October, so those are the outer limits of a full-strength visit. The sea has averaged around 24C in June and 25C in September in recent years, against 27C at the August peak, when the town is at its busiest.
Is Cavtat a good base for visiting Dubrovnik?
Yes, with one caveat about timing. Bus 10 links the two all year, roughly every half hour, from 05:00 until a last departure from Dubrovnik at 01:30. The boat is the nicer arrival and lands you at the Old Town port rather than at Gruz, but it runs only 1 April to 1 November, six sailings each way, with the last back at 17:30.
When is the Racic mausoleum open and what does it cost?
1 May to 31 October, Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 16:00. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays, and the Museums and Galleries of Konavle publish no hours for it between 1 November and 30 April. Admission is EUR 4 for adults, EUR 2.50 for students and seniors and EUR 10 for a family. There is no step-free access, and a guided tour costs EUR 20 if arranged in advance.
How far is Cavtat from Dubrovnik Airport?
The Cavtat and Konavle tourist board puts the airport, at Cilipi, 5 km from Cavtat, and Dubrovnik 18 km away. That proximity is the practical case for the town: you can be at your accommodation within about fifteen minutes of landing rather than crossing the city. There is no railway anywhere in the region, so it is bus, boat, taxi or car.
When is the sea warm enough to swim in Cavtat?
June through October on recent measurements. Sea surface temperature has averaged about 19C in May, 24C in June, 27C in July and August, 25C in September and 23C in October, so the shoulder either side of high summer swims comfortably. Winter water sits near 15C. September pairs the warm sea with a much lighter town.
What else is there to see in Cavtat and Konavle?
House Bukovac, birthplace of the painter Vlaho Bukovac, EUR 7 and open all year. The Konavle County Museum at Gruda, EUR 5, which stages a 45-minute demonstration of silk production for EUR 12. And Konavle itself, a stretch of valley and cliff south of the town covering 209 square kilometres according to the local tourist board.
Is Cavtat worth visiting in winter?
Only if the quiet is the point. Between November and April the mausoleum has no published hours, the Dubrovnik boat does not sail, and November and December are the wettest months at roughly 290 mm and 240 mm of rain. What stays open is House Bukovac and the Konavle County Museum, Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 16:00, plus bus 10 on its full year-round timetable.
How many days do you need in Cavtat?
Three. One for the town itself, the promenade around the Rat peninsula and the mausoleum on a weekday morning. One for Dubrovnik, going in on the boat and coming back on the bus. One for Konavle, meaning the valley, the museum at Gruda and the cliffs. Add a fourth if you want a day given over entirely to swimming.
When is Cavtat busiest?
July and August, when Dubrovnik day-trip traffic is at its heaviest. The Dubrovnik Port Authority now works to a 2026 berthing policy that caps simultaneous cruise visitors at 4,000 and sets minimum stay lengths by ship capacity, with vessels of 500 passengers or fewer exempt. June and September are markedly lighter in Cavtat itself.
What is the wettest time of year in Cavtat?
Autumn, and heavily so. November averages around 290 mm of rain and December around 240 mm, against 24 mm in July; October is already near 210 mm. It arrives in fewer, harder bursts than the totals suggest, since November still averages only 14 days with rain, but a late-autumn week here can be genuinely wet.
Frequently asked questions about visiting Cavtat
When is the best time to visit Cavtat?
June is the highest-scoring month (9/10 on the Holiday Climate Index). Typical conditions: 19–27°C (6 rainy days). The top three months by score are June, September, May.

Is Cavtat too hot in summer?
2 months (July, August) trip the heat deal-breaker in our scoring: apparent temperature crosses the comfort cap, so even with clear skies and low rain the score is held down. Plan around it if heat tolerance is low.
When are crowds lowest in Cavtat?
Search-interest seasonality (Google Trends 2021-2025) is lowest in November and peaks in July. Interest tracks both in-trip visitors and lead-time planners, so treat it as a "destination is on people's minds" signal rather than literal arrivals.
Which months in Cavtat have good weather but fewer tourists?
April (climate 8/10, crowd index 39) and October (climate 8/10, crowd index 21) — shoulder months with above-average climate and below-median search-interest. Often the best value-for-weather trade.
What is the UV index in Cavtat by month?
UV peaks at 8 (very high) in July and is lowest in January at 1 (low). Monthly peak values: Jan 1, Feb 2, Mar 3, Apr 5, May 6, Jun 8, Jul 8, Aug 7, Sep 5, Oct 3, Nov 2, Dec 1. July reach very high or extreme levels — apply SPF 50+, wear a hat and protective clothing, and limit direct sun between 11:00 and 17:00.
What is the UV index in Cavtat in July?
July is the peak UV month in Cavtat, with a daily-peak UV index of 8 (very high). At this level, sunburn can occur in under 20 minutes on unprotected fair skin. Apply SPF 50+, wear protective clothing and a hat, and avoid direct midday sun (11:00–17:00).
How high can UV get in Cavtat on the sunniest days?
Most days look like the monthly average, but on the sunniest ~1 in 10 days UV climbs higher than the mean suggests. June is the worst case: typical days average UV 8 (high), but the top 10% of days reach UV 9 (very high) — and even higher. Months where the sunniest days routinely exceed the typical reading: February, April, June, August, September. Plan sun protection for the worst case, not the average.
