The Acropolis is capped at 20,000 a day, by hourly slot
Since 4 September 2023 the Acropolis has had a ceiling. On the basis of a study by ODAP — the state organisation that holds the exclusive right to sell tickets to Greek archaeological sites — the Culture Ministry fixed the maximum daily number of visitors at 20,000 and split the 08:00 to 20:00 day into twelve hourly zones, each with its own quota. The first, 08:00 to 09:00, takes 3,000. Every ticket now carries a time zone and admits you only within it; individuals can move their slot up to 14 days before the visit, tour operators up to 24 hours. From 1 April 2024 the same system was extended to every site in Greece with an electronic ticket. Before it, the rock had taken 22,000 to 23,000 people on its worst days.
The price changed too. Since 1 April 2025 the Acropolis ticket is €30 full and €15 reduced, and it is the same in January as in July — the half-price winter rate that used to apply from November to March has gone.
Heat closures are separate, and they are decided day by day. On extreme-heat days the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens shuts the site through the middle of the day — 12:00 to 17:00 in 2023 and 2024, 13:00 to 17:00 in 2025. No published temperature triggers it and the announcement comes that morning, so it can be anticipated but not planned around. The rock has no shade, which is why it closes before less exposed sites do.

How many days do you need in Athens?
Two to three. One for the Acropolis, its museum and the surrounding ancient sites; one for the city itself — Plaka, the central markets and the National Archaeological Museum, which holds far more than the Acropolis site does. A third gives you a day trip to Cape Sounion or a ferry to Aegina. In July and August add time, because you will be working around the afternoon heat.

Only in the hour your ticket names, and sometimes not at all. Entry is by hourly slot between 08:00 and 20:00, so an afternoon ticket is an afternoon visit and nothing else.
