Default 27 °C is the upper edge of the Holiday Climate Index "ideal comfort" band (Scott, Rutty, Amelung & Tang, 2016). Above this, most warm-tourism travellers report measurable discomfort.
Default 29 °C is the Beach Climate Index "bathtub" line (Morgan et al.) — where the sea stops being refreshing and starts feeling like a warm bath.

A decree closes 1,100 metres of Altavilla's shore
Sicilian bathing water is allocated by decree, and Altavilla Milicia appears on both sides of the 2026 one. D.D.G. 388 of 23 March 2026, from the regional health department, fixes the season at 1 May to 31 October and lists, comune by comune, which water is legally swimmable. Altavilla Milicia's closed list runs to 1,100 metres: 800 metres at Ponte San Michele and 300 along the Litorale della Bruca, both barred for pollution, with a further 300-metre exclusion at the mouth of the Milicia river.
What remains open is more than four times as long. The decree lists four monitored stretches here, each sampled monthly through the season: Spiaggia Figurella at 1,550 metres, Cala Capo Grosso at 1,200, Torre Colonna at 1,100 and Cala Sciabica at 900 - about 4,750 metres in all. They run south-east from the town; the closed strips sit at the north-west end, around the river. Mayors must post metal prohibition signs, so the boundary is marked on the ground.
The shape of the season matters more than its length. Bathing stays legal to 31 October, and the back half is the better half: the sea averaged 19.4C in May against 26.2C in September and 23.9C in October over 2022-2024. Altavilla Milicia is small, about 9,100 residents, and its own calendar peaks on 8 September, the patronal feast of the Madonna della Milicia. Regional trains put Palermo Centrale about half an hour away.

When is the best time to visit Altavilla Milicia?
September, if the sea is the point. Water temperatures averaged 26.2C that month over 2022-2024, against 19.4C in May and 23.8C in June, while air temperatures ease to about 24C from August's 28C. The trade is rain: roughly 56 mm over nine days in September, against 22 mm over five days in August.
Which beaches at Altavilla Milicia can you legally swim from?
Four stretches are listed as monitored bathing water in the 2026 regional decree: Spiaggia Figurella at 1,550 metres, Cala Capo Grosso at 1,200, Torre Colonna on Via Consolare at 1,100 and Cala Sciabica at 900. All four lie south-east of the town centre, and each is sampled monthly at a fixed point during the season.
Where is bathing banned at Altavilla Milicia?
Two stretches are closed for pollution under D.D.G. 388 of 2026: 800 metres at Ponte San Michele and 300 metres along the Litorale della Bruca. A separate 300-metre exclusion covers the mouth of the Milicia river, and the Pozzillo Rosselli treatment plant discharges within the San Michele zone. Metal prohibition signs must be posted at each.
When is the feast of the Madonna della Milicia?
The patronal day is 8 September, when the solemn procession, the carro trionfale and the vulata - children lowered on ropes to salute the icon - all fall. The surrounding programme is much longer: in 2025 the Comitato dei Festeggiamenti ran events from 29 August to 14 September, with the triumphal cart built at the sanctuary from 29 August.
How do you reach Altavilla Milicia without a car?
It has its own station on the Palermo to Messina line. RFI's timetable for 14 June to 12 December 2026 shows runs of about half an hour to Palermo Centrale and around forty minutes to Cefalu, with Palermo Centrale by far the commonest destination on the board. More than half the listed departures do not run on Sundays or public holidays.
How many days do you need in Altavilla Milicia?
One night covers the town itself - the sanctuary, the seafront and one of the four permitted beaches. It works better as a three or four night base, taking the train west to Palermo and east to Cefalu, than as a destination in its own right. The comune has about 9,100 residents and 23.8 square kilometres of territory.
Is there anything to see besides the beach?
The Chiesazza - the ruined church of Santa Maria di Campogrosso, built at the end of the eleventh century to mark the Norman victory at Misilmeri - stands on high ground inland. It is a consolidated ruin rather than a working church, and the FAI has carried it in its Luoghi del Cuore census in seven editions between 2010 and 2022.
How hot does it get in summer?
July and August average daily highs near 32C. July is the driest month of the year, about 9 mm over three rain days, with 428 hours of sunshine and a UV index peaking near 9 and reaching 10 on the top tenth of days. Nights give little relief: minima average 23C in both months, with the sea at 27-28C.
What is Altavilla Milicia like in winter?
Mild and wet rather than cold. January and February average highs of about 15C with lows near 8C, and the rain concentrates in November and December - roughly 95 mm over 13 days and 94 mm over 10 in recent years. The sea sits near 15C through February, and the bathing season does not reopen until 1 May.
What are the official Sicilian bathing season dates?
1 May to 31 October for 2026, fixed by D.D.G. 388 of 23 March 2026 from the regional health department. The same decree sets the testing window - sea water sampled monthly from May to October, with pre-season samples taken before 1 May - and notes that the region may lengthen or shorten the season, so it is re-issued each spring.
