Sopron's lake shore has had no beach since 2018

Every Sopron itinerary bolts on Lake Ferto, and most of them are describing a shore that no longer works. The Ferto-tavi vizitelep at Fertorakos, the only public bathing place on the Hungarian side of the lake, closed in 2018 and was fenced off from 2020 for the Sopron-Ferto development. What finally reopened on 8 May 2025 was not the beach. It was a sailing harbour of several hundred berths, run by the Ferto lake sailing association, for boat owners and anglers. The regional lake portal still states flatly that you cannot swim or take a pleasure boat at Fertorakos.

There is exactly one way onto the water, and it is small. The Ferto-Hansag National Park runs a one-hour electric boat trip through the reed channels from that same northern harbour: 8,000 Ft a head, a maximum of five passengers per departure, on published dates only, booked in advance, no dogs, cancelled outright in a storm. Scheduled ferries and open bathing are on the Austrian side of the lake.

In town the equivalent trap is the weekly calendar. The Tuztorony, the fire tower on Fo ter, is the one Sopron Museum site that opens seven days a week, 10:00 to 18:00 and until 20:00 on Friday and Saturday. Every other branch shuts on Monday, the Patika-haz does not open until 14:00 any day, and the Labashaz is closed altogether. A Monday in Sopron is a tower-and-streets day whether you planned it that way or not.

What is the best time to visit Sopron?

Late May to mid June, or September. The town's search interest peaks in August and July, and recent summers have run hot: July averaged a 28C daily maximum over 2020-2024 against 25.5C in the 1991-2020 record. July is also the wettest month, around 84 mm across 12 rain days, so summer afternoons are storm-prone.

Can you swim in Lake Ferto on the Hungarian side?

No. The Ferto-tavi vizitelep at Fertorakos was the only public bathing place on the Hungarian shore and it closed in 2018, with the site fenced off from 2020 for the Sopron-Ferto development. The sailing harbour that opened on 8 May 2025 has no beach. For open bathing you cross to the Austrian side of the lake.

Is there a boat trip on Lake Ferto from Fertorakos?

Only one, and it is tiny. The Ferto-Hansag National Park runs a one-hour electric boat through the reed channels from the northern harbour, 8,000 Ft per person, capped at five passengers per departure, on published dates and by prior booking. Dogs are not allowed and the trip is cancelled in a storm. There is no scheduled sightseeing boat.

What is open in Sopron on a Monday?

The Tuztorony, and little else in the way of museums. The fire tower runs 10:00 to 18:00 seven days a week. The Muzeumnegyed, the Lenck villa, the Central Mining Museum, the Macskako children's museum, the Pek-haz, the old synagogue and the Patika-haz all close on Mondays, and the Labashaz is shut every day of the week.

How much does the Sopron fire tower cost to climb?

3,000 Ft for an adult, 1,500 Ft at the half rate for children from three, students and pensioners, and 6,500 Ft for a family of two adults and two children. Booked groups of ten or more pay 2,200 Ft each. The ticket desk closes half an hour before the tower does, which matters on Friday and Saturday when it stays open until 20:00.

Why is Sopron called the most loyal town?

Because of a vote. In the plebiscite of 14 to 16 December 1921 Sopron and eight surrounding villages chose to stay with Hungary rather than pass to Austria, earning the title Civitas Fidelissima. The Husegkapu, the Loyalty Gate at the foot of the fire tower commemorates it, and government decree 244/2001 fixed 14 December as the Day of Loyalty.

How many days do you need in Sopron?

Two. The walled old town is small enough to cover in an afternoon: Fo ter, the fire tower, the Roman and medieval layers under the Muzeumnegyed. The second day belongs outside town, at the Fertorakos quarry and the lake shore nine kilometres north, or in the Loverek woods on the southern edge of the town.

Is Sopron worth visiting in winter?

It is the emptiest time by a wide margin: search interest for Sopron bottoms out at zero in December against a peak of 100 in August. December averages 1C, with daytime highs near 3.9C. The compensation is that the fire tower opens every day including Monday, and 14 December is the town's own commemoration day.

What happened to the VOLT Festival in Sopron?

It was called off for 2023 on economic grounds and has not run since. SopronFest was created to fill the gap, and in 2026 it moved to summer and to the Loverek, the old VOLT site, running from 2 to 4 July with The Prodigy headlining. The 2027 edition is set for 24 to 26 June.

What is on at the Fertorakos quarry?

The former limestone quarry nine kilometres from Sopron holds a cave theatre run by ProKultura Sopron. The 2026 summer programme was billed as the season of enchantments and ran through August into early September, with musicals, concerts and comedies priced from roughly 6,000 to 15,000 Ft depending on the production.
