For four months the state lets you in after dark
Side's ancient city sits inside the modern resort, and for part of the year the Turkish state changes when you may walk through it.
Under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Night Museums programme, Side is one of only five sites in the whole of Antalya province licensed to admit visitors after dark — 19:00 to 22:00 between June and early October, on a separate ticket from the daytime one. Through the summer season the daytime gate also runs to 21:00. For the rest of the year it is a daylight proposition on shorter hours.
One caveat that most guides have not caught up with: the Roman theatre, the monument standing in the middle of the town, has been closed for restoration since 21 November 2024 and appears by name on the Ministry's register of temporarily closed units, with no reopening date.

Can you visit Side ruins at night?
Yes, between June and early October. Side is one of only five sites in Antalya province in the Ministry's Night Museums programme, opening 19:00 to 22:00 on a separate ticket. Museum-card holders still need to buy the night entry. Outside that window the site closes in the late afternoon or evening depending on season.
Is the Roman theatre in Side open?
No. It has been closed for restoration since 21 November 2024 and is listed by name on the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's register of temporarily closed units, with the reopening given only as when works are completed. The Ministry's own ticket tariff still carries a note that the theatre is closed.
What is the best month to visit Side?
May, June, September or October. July and August are very hot on an exposed coastal site with limited shade, though the night opening between June and early October makes summer evenings workable. Spring and autumn give comfortable daytime sightseeing and a sea that is still warm in September.
How much does it cost to enter Side ruins?
The Ministry prices foreign visitors in euro — around EUR 7 for the archaeological site and EUR 5 for the museum, with a combined ticket at about EUR 10. The night session is ticketed separately. Prices are reviewed annually, so check the Ministry site rather than relying on figures quoted on travel pages.
How many days do you need in Side?
Two. One for the ancient city, the temples on the headland and the museum, ideally split between a morning and an evening visit in summer; one for the beaches or a trip to Aspendos, whose theatre is among the best preserved anywhere and which also has night opening.
Is there a tourist tax in Turkey?
Yes, an accommodation tax introduced in January 2023 at 2%. It was cut to 1% by presidential decision for stays between 1 May and 31 December 2026, reverting to 2% in January 2027 unless extended. It is charged on the accommodation bill rather than collected separately at check-in.
What is there to see in Side besides the ruins?
The temples of Apollo and Athena on the headland are the signature view, especially at sunset, and the Side Museum occupies a restored Roman bath. Beyond that it is a beach resort — the archaeological site and the modern town are physically interleaved, which is unusual and is much of the appeal.
When is Side least crowded?
May and October, either side of the main package season. The night opening between June and early October also spreads visitors out considerably, so an evening in July can be quieter than a midday in May. Winter is very quiet, but hours are shorter and much of the resort closes.
Is Side or Antalya better?
Antalya is a full city with a large old town, museums and an airport; Side is a small resort built around an archaeological site. Side is better if the ruins and the beach are the point; Antalya if you want a base with more range. They are about an hour apart, so combining them is straightforward.
Is Side worth visiting?
Yes — few places let you walk through a Roman city that is still physically part of a working town, with temples directly above the sea. The night opening in summer is genuinely unusual. Set expectations about the theatre, which has been closed since 2024, and about how developed the modern resort is.
