The season officially starts in April, but a third of the park opens in May
The Prussian palaces foundation defines its summer season as 1 April to 31 October, which makes April look like a safe shoulder month at Sanssouci. It is not. Four monuments inside the park are marked ab Mai — from May only — on the foundation's own schedule: the Picture Gallery, the Chinese House, Charlottenhof Palace and the Steam Engine House.
The Steam Engine House, the Moorish-looking pumping station by the water, goes further: from May it opens on the first Sunday of the month only. You can spend a week in Potsdam in July and still not get inside it.
Three more are shut altogether for restoration — the Orangery Palace, the Roman Baths, and Cecilienhof, where the 1945 Potsdam Conference was held, closed since November 2024 with works running to 2028. An April visitor pays shoulder-season prices for a park with a third of its buildings locked.

What is the best month to visit Potsdam?
May to September. May is the first month when the smaller Sanssouci monuments open — four of them are May-onward only — and September keeps warm weather with thinner crowds. July is warmest at about 24C and is also the wettest month at around 77mm, arriving as afternoon storms rather than steady rain.
Is Sanssouci open in April?
Partly. The foundation's summer season begins 1 April and Schloss Sanssouci itself is open, but the Picture Gallery, the Chinese House, Charlottenhof Palace and the Steam Engine House are all listed as opening from May. An April visit gets the park and the main palace but not the smaller buildings.
When is the Steam Engine House in Potsdam open?
From May, on the first Sunday of each month only, 10:00 to 17:30 — plus 1 May and 31 October. It is the Moorish-styled pumping station built to drive the Sanssouci fountains. Because of that schedule it is entirely possible to spend a week in Potsdam in summer and never get inside.
Is Cecilienhof open to visitors?
No. The palace where the 1945 Potsdam Conference was held has been closed for restoration since November 2024, with works running to 2028. The Orangery Palace and the Roman Baths are also closed for restoration. Check the foundation's current schedule before planning a visit around any of the three.
Do you need tickets for Schloss Sanssouci?
Yes, and they are bound to fixed admission times — the number of tickets per day is limited, so booking ahead is sensible in summer. Note also that Schloss Sanssouci is closed on Mondays while the Neues Palais closes on Tuesdays, which catches out visitors planning a single-day sweep.
Is Sanssouci Park free?
Yes. Park entry is free and the grounds are open daily from 08:00 until dusk, year-round. The palaces and pavilions inside are individually ticketed. That makes Potsdam a genuinely good winter walk even when most of the buildings are shut, which is not true of many palace complexes.
How many days do you need in Potsdam?
One long day covers Sanssouci park, the main palace and the Neues Palais at the far end — the park is large and the walk between them is around 2 km. A second day allows the Dutch Quarter, the Neuer Garten and the Marmorpalais, which itself opens only at weekends in April before going daily from May.
Can you visit Potsdam as a day trip from Berlin?
Easily — regional trains take around 30 to 40 minutes from central Berlin and the Berlin transport ticket extends to Potsdam with the right zone. The park is a short bus or tram ride from Potsdam Hauptbahnhof. A single day is enough for Sanssouci, though not for the outlying palaces.
