Book an hour at Knossos, and it can still shut at noon
Knossos is now a booked-hour site. Since the state e-ticket was extended across Greece in April 2024 the entry time you choose is binding: ODAP, which sells every ticket to a Greek archaeological site, states on its booking page that entry at the selected hour is compulsory and changes are allowed up to two hours before. A ticket is €20, or €10 reduced. There is no published headcount ceiling of the kind the Acropolis has: the hour is fixed, the daily total is not.
The midday closure is not a single national order, which is how it is usually described. Each regional Ephorate of Antiquities decides for its own sites, and they have not moved together: Athens has shut from 12:00 in some summers and 13:00 in others, while on 22 July 2026 the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion published its own notice that Knossos would close from 12:00 to 17:00 that day because of high temperatures. No published temperature triggers it, and the notice goes up that morning.
Knossos took 977,299 visitors in 2025 on the national statistics authority's count, after 1,010,006 in 2024 — the most visited archaeological site in Greece after the Athens Acropolis, and a World Heritage site since July 2025. August is the peak at 171,520, about 5,500 a day on a shadeless open-air ruin. The months a climate table scores highest for Crete are exactly the months when five of its opening hours can vanish at a few hours' notice.
