Thirty minutes inside, and no way to simply walk in
Neuschwanstein joined the UNESCO World Heritage List on 12 July 2025, as part of the Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria — and it has become harder to enter rather than easier. The Bavarian Palace Administration reduced guided-tour group sizes after the recent restoration, and its president has said pre-pandemic volumes will not return. The castle drew about 1.5 million visitors in 2019 but 1,086,432 in 2025.
There is no free roaming. The interior can be seen only on a timed guided tour of roughly thirty minutes, and latecomers are refused entry rather than moved to a later slot. The day itself is three hours shorter in winter: 09:00 to 18:00 from late March to mid-October, 10:00 to 16:00 the rest of the year.
And in winter the postcard viewpoint may simply be shut — access to the Marienbruecke closes for ice and snow with no published calendar, decided day by day.

What is the best time of year to visit Neuschwanstein?
Late spring through early autumn, when the castle runs 09:00 to 18:00 and the Marienbruecke viewpoint is reliably open. Winter gives a shorter 10:00 to 16:00 day and the bridge may be closed for ice with no notice. June is the wettest month locally at around 207mm, so mornings are the safer bet.
Can you visit Neuschwanstein without a tour?
