Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is the fortress complex on Castle Rock — the 130-m-high volcanic plug at the head of Edinburgh's Royal Mile — that has been the defining military and royal site of Scotland for nearly a millennium. The castle hosts St Margaret's Chapel (the oldest building in Edinburgh, c. 1130), the Honours of Scotland (crown jewels, used at every Scottish coronation since 1543), the Stone of Destiny (returned from Westminster in 1996), and the One O'Clock Gun (fired daily except Sunday since 1861 to set ship chronometers in Leith). Approximately 2.2 million visitors per year make it Scotland's most-visited paid attraction and the second-most-visited UK heritage site after the Tower of London. The famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo runs nightly on the Castle Esplanade for three weeks in August — the only time the castle is genuinely crowd-controlled. Climate is Edinburgh's classic North Sea maritime: cool year-round, wind exposure intense on the rock, weather can change inside an hour.

Common questions

When is the best time to visit Edinburgh Castle?
Late April through June and September are the sweet spots — long daylight, comfortable temperatures, manageable crowds. August is busy (Festival + Tattoo) but uniquely atmospheric. Winter (Nov–Feb) has shortest queues but the rock is bitter cold and visibility from the ramparts is often nil. Always layer up — Castle Rock is 5°C colder and 30 km/h windier than Princes Street below.
How do I book Edinburgh Castle tickets?
Direct via edinburghcastle.scot — timed entry, released 90 days in advance. Tickets are required (no walk-up admission) and sell out 1–2 weeks ahead in August. Combine ticket with the Crown Jewels is included by default; Tattoo tickets are a completely separate booking via edintattoo.co.uk and sell out 6-12 months ahead.
How does Edinburgh Castle compare to Stirling Castle?
Edinburgh is bigger, busier, more pageantry (Crown Jewels, Royal Apartments, military museums). Stirling is older as a royal residence (Mary Queen of Scots was crowned here at 9 months old), more atmospheric, half the crowds, and the Great Hall has been beautifully restored. Many travelers visit both — they're 90 minutes apart by train and tell different chapters of the same Scottish history.
Is the climate at Edinburgh Castle different from Edinburgh?
Yes — the rock is exposed on all sides. Wind is consistently 30-40% stronger than at street level, and the open ramparts are 4-6°C colder. Bring a windproof layer even in summer; in winter the gun terrace can feel sub-zero on a sunny day. See the Edinburgh page for the city's climate-month scoring.
