The famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo runs nightly on the Castle Esplanade for three weeks in August — the only time the castle is genuinely crowd-controlled. Late April through June and September are the sweet spots — long daylight, comfortable temperatures, manageable crowds. August is busy (Festival + Tattoo) but uniquely atmospheric.
