Alcatraz

Alcatraz Island is the 22-acre rocky outcrop in San Francisco Bay, 2 km north of Fisherman's Wharf, that operated as the most notorious federal prison in the United States from 1934 to 1963. The island's fortress, cellblock, and lighthouse — plus the harsh tidal currents that supposedly made escape impossible — became one of America's most-visited historic sites after the National Park Service opened it to the public in 1973. Visits run by Alcatraz City Cruises (the official concessionaire) from Pier 33; the 15-minute ferry ride is followed by a self-guided cell-house audio tour narrated by former inmates and guards. Tickets sell out 4-12 weeks in advance during peak season. Climate-wise, plan for San Francisco's classic microclimate: cool maritime conditions year-round (highs rarely above 21°C), heavy fog April–August ("Karl the Fog" rolls in from the Pacific most summer afternoons), and the clearest skies actually in September–October.

Common questions

When is the best time to visit Alcatraz?
September–October has the clearest skies and best photographic conditions (San Francisco fog mostly lifts by then). Early morning ferries year-round have lower crowds. Avoid mid-summer afternoons (fog + crowds). November–March is genuinely quiet but bring layers — the island is windy and 5°C colder than the city.
How far in advance do I need to book Alcatraz tickets?
Day tour: 4–8 weeks ahead in summer, 1–2 weeks in winter. Night tour: 8–12 weeks ahead year-round (limited capacity, sells out fastest). Behind-the-Scenes and Alcatraz Family Tour: 12+ weeks. Only Alcatraz City Cruises sells legitimate tickets — beware third-party resellers.
How long does an Alcatraz visit take?
Allow 2.5–3 hours total — 15 min ferry each way, plus 90 min cell house audio tour, plus optional landscape walk. The last ferry leaves Alcatraz around 6:30 PM in summer, 4:30 PM in winter. You can stay as long as you like and catch any return ferry.
Is the climate at Alcatraz different from San Francisco?
Slightly colder and much windier — figure 4–6°C cooler than downtown SF, with stronger marine layer exposure. Dress warmly year-round, even in July. See the San Francisco page for the full climate-month scoring; the island's micro-conditions are otherwise identical.
